Wilson Applauds the President’s Address to the Nation

February 4, 2002
Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC, attending his first State of the Union Address, made the following statement today in response to President Bush's speech to Congress and the nation:"A wartime State of the Union Address is an extraordinary challenge and President Bush has successfully met that challenge. Tonight, President Bush shared his vision for the country, that in a time of war and recession gives confidence and hope to all Americans."When our nation was attacked in September, the President promised that we would seek out global terrorism wherever it exists. Now he stands by that oath, and as he leads us in future battles, we as a nation stand by him and our men and women in uniform. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will join with the call of the President to do all that is necessary to defend our homeland and defeat these enemies of freedom. His Reaganesque promotion of military strength is the best course to achieve peace through strength.""In addition, the President has shown true leadership in his economic proposals that will help create jobs and strengthen the overall economy. These proposals focus on improved education, a prescription drug program, reliable and affordable health care, a secure retirement, and a comprehensive energy policy while advocating an economic stimulus plan to advance tax reductions."I urge my colleagues and all Americans to stand behind the President at this critical moment in our history. As the President's congressional district campaign chairman in 2000, I see my faith in the President's ability fulfilled."###
