Wilson Votes to Support Savannah River Site and MOX Project

July 11, 2014

(Washington, DC) – Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02) issued the following statement after the House passed the FY15 Energy and Water Appropriations bill. This piece of legislation is very important to South Carolina, as it will provide resources for the Savannah River Site (SRS) in Aiken and Barnwell counties.

"The passage of the Energy and Water Appropriations bill ensures that our vital national security and environmental missions at the Savannah River Site remain intact. I am grateful that we were able to provide MOX with the additional resources to move forward with its completion, which is necessary to fulfill our international nonproliferation agreements. The people of Aiken and Barnwell counties deserve consistency. For far too long, Washington's budget battles have spilled into the homes of dedicated Site workers because the President and Senate Democrats prioritize unnecessary spending over our national security needs. As the Senate begins to consider its version of this bill, I remain committed to working with Senator Lindsay Graham and Senator Tim Scott to ensure that the Savannah River Site receives the appropriate resources to carry out all of its missions," Congressman Joe Wilson stated.

While the House debated this bill, Congressman Wilson delivered a speech on the House floor in support of the MOX project, along with Congressman Jack Kingston. The purpose of the speech was to speak in favor of MOX because the project was threatened by a damaging amendment that was later withdrawn. To view the speech, please click here.
