Health care reform and improving national security and local issues such as the expansion of Beaufort National Cemetery and the creation of a Jasper County port are on this year's legislative agenda for U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, the congressman said Thursday.

"This is my virtual contract with the people of (South Carolina's) 2nd District," Wilson said before about 20 supporters during a press conference outside his Beaufort office on Port Republic Street.

Wilson will push his agenda while campaigning to keep his seat in Congress. He is expected to face a rematch in November with Democrat Rob Miller of Beaufort, whom Wilson defeated 54 percent to 46 percent in 2008 to win his fourth term.

Wilson spoke little Thursday of the upcoming election, focusing instead on economic issues such as job creation and tax cuts to spur economic growth.

"We must cut taxes across the board so small businesses can grow and jobs can be created," Wilson said.

During his 15-minute speech, Wilson praised President Barack Obama for sending more troops to Afghanistan, citing the attempted bombing Christmas Day of a commercial jetliner bound for Detroit as proof that America must remain vigilant in its defense.

"There are terrorists and jihadists that want to kill as many Americans as they can," Wilson said. "They are virtual kamikazes. I'm very grateful that we will now have reforms in place to prevent something like that from occurring again."

Wilson also trumpeted energy independence and exploration of all sources of renewable and alternative fuel sources.

Wilson is expected to make similar appearances todayin Columbia and Orangeburg.
