Jan 13, 2005
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) announced that the U.S. Department of Energy has awarded a $1 million grant to the South Carolina Emergency Management Division (SCEMD), of Columbia, South Carolina. SCEMD will use the funding in Aiken, Allendale, and Barnwell counties to support emergency preparedness and response activities associated with a potential release of hazardous materials from the Savannah River Site (SRS). “This contract is great news for the counties surrounding the Savannah River Site,” said Congressman Wilson. “While SRS has a strong history of safety and precaution, these counties must be able to efficiently react to accidents involving hazardous materials. By awarding the grant, the Department of Energy is taking an important step to ensure that our first responders can protect the people who live and work around SRS.”
