Wilson Introduces Adoption Legislation to Help American Families
Jan 26, 2005
Congressman Joe Wilson today introduced the Adoption Tax Relief Guarantee Act of 2005 (H.R. 305), which will help make permanent the current $10,000 child adoption tax credit. “While many Americans would like to adopt children, the high costs associated with the adoption process make this option impractical for many families,” said Wilson. “By offering a tax credit to offset adoption costs, we’ll help these families provide loving homes to millions of children. I strongly urge other members of Congress to join me in making the child adoption tax credit permanent.” Adopting a child today can cost between $10,000 and $30,000. To help Americans afford these expenses, H.R. 305 makes permanent the current tax credit up to $10,000 for qualified expenses relating to the adoption of a child for both domestic and international adoptions. Additionally, this legislation will exclude up to $10,000 from income qualified adoption expenses relating to an employer’s adoption assistance program. Congressman Wilson is the father of an adopted son and a member of the Congressional Coalition on Adoption. Please see the attached letter regarding H.R. 305.
