Congressman Wilson’s Statement on President’s Afghanistan Plan
December 1, 2009
Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement after confirmed reports of President Obama’s decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan in the next six months:
“I applaud the President’s decision to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan. While this decision is long overdue, I’m pleased that the President has listened to our commanders on the ground as they aggressively pursue a multi-dimensional counter-insurgency strategy to secure Afghanistan.
“Success in Afghanistan should be we win, they lose. I hope the President will use his speech to the American people tonight to outline the roadmap to winning. The speech I’d like to hear tonight would focus on the Administration’s commitment to listen to our commanders on the ground, properly define the role of Afghan National Security Forces, and recognize we face a determined enemy who plan to test our resolve.
“For the sake of our mission, American families at home, and our brave men and women in uniform, I hope the President will rally Congressional leaders behind his strategy and our troops’ mission in Afghanistan,” said Congressman Joe Wilson.
Congressman Joe Wilson, co-chair of the Afghanistan Caucus, has been to Afghanistan nine times. He is a 31 year veteran of the Army Reserve and National Guard with four sons currently serving in the military.
