Congressmen Wilson and Cohen Introduce Resolution to Remove Russia from the United Nations Security Council

December 15, 2022

Washington, D.C.Congressmen Joe Wilson (R-SC) and Steve Cohen (D-TN), the Ranking Member and Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, introduced a resolution making the finding that, in light of Russia's unprovoked invasion of and ongoing war against Ukraine, Russia's presence on the United Nations Security Council ‘violates the purposes and principles of the United Nations.'

The resolution continues by also urging President Biden ‘to direct the Department of State and other relevant Federal departments and agencies to pursue all appropriate steps with Allies, partners, and other countries to limit, suspend, or terminate rights and privileges that the Russian Federation exercises in the Security Council of the United Nations under (the) United Nations Charter.'

Background

This resolution is a continuation of Congressmen Wilson and Cohen's efforts, when, on October 12, they sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken urging him to initiate a process to replace Russia on the UN Security Council as the fifth permanent member.
