Jasper Port Decision to Bring Jobs to Lowcountry

April 8, 2002

Wilson Welcomes Circuit Court Decision Giving Jasper County Land Rights

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC, applauded the decision from Circuit Court Judge Perry M. Buckner III upholding the rights of Jasper County to land on the Savannah River."Judge Buckner's decision is a pivotal one that brings us much closer to the construction of a port in Jasper County," said Rep. Wilson. "This is such an exciting time for the Lowcountry, because with the port will come thousands and thousands of new jobs, an enhanced economy, and new opportunities for everyone in the region."The Circuit Court dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Georgia Department of Transportation that tried to prevent Jasper County assuming ownership of the land. The Georgia Department of Transportation has 30 days to appeal the decision."This is not the final step in securing a port in Jasper County, but it is a huge leap forward and should give everyone in the Lowcountry hope that this project is well on its way to becoming reality. This is wonderful news, and I just want to thank Jasper County Administrator Henry Moss and all of the local officials who have worked so hard for this," said Rep. Wilson.###
