Republicans Continue to Secure America’s Economic Future

October 15, 2002

Wilson says Democrats’ calls for Summit is a masked attempt to raise taxes

Today, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) participated in a press conference with House Majority Leader Dick Armey (R-TX), House Majority Whip Tom Delay, House Deputy Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) and other members of congress to address the economic concerns of the American people. Following is a statement by Rep. Wilson:"Since I arrived in Washington less than a year ago, I have learned that Democrats like to talk politics much more than they like to enact sound policy. Their call for an economic summit is nothing more than a masked attempt to raise taxes on America's working families.""Americans are tired of the Democrats failed ‘Tax & Spend' rhetoric. Rather than hold these political press events, the Democrats could learn from the economic summits that the Republicans have been holding all year long, we like to call them meetings of the House of Representatives."The Republican leadership in the House has an outstanding record of working with President Bush to bring economic relief to nation. Republicans passed President Bush's Tax Relief plan that has widely been praised as preventing an even deeper downturn in our economy. On the day I was sworn into office, I voted for the President's economic stimulus plan, which Democrats opposed."Republicans have worked with Democrats in a bi-partisan fashion to bring tough new corporate reforms and send corporate wrong-doers to jail. The Republican House has also passed a pension security bill that is important to all Americans concerned with their retirement, yet it has been stalled in the Democrat-controlled Senate.""Even with this record of Republican success, we can do more. We are now working in the House to save Social Security, better 401(k)s and IRAs, and fighting to control government spending to avert deficits that would only hurt the economy.""If the Democrats have any responsible ideas to help America's economy, let them bring those to Congress for a debate and vote, and not waste our time with political grandstanding. While Democrats talk, Republicans continue to take real action in securing America's economic future."###
