Authorizes a third national veterans cemetery to be developed in South Carolina
Today, Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) announced the unanimous passage of H.R. 1516, the National Cemetery Expansion Act of 2003. The bill authorizes a third national cemetery to be developed in South Carolina in either the Columbia or Greenville areas. Current national veterans cemeteries are located in Beaufort and Florence. “This is great news for the veteran community in South Carolina,” said Congressman Wilson. “Men and women that have served bravely in our Armed Forces deserve a proper resting place, and it is important that we have areas available that are close enough for families to visit.” H.R. 1516 authorizes the development of six new national veterans cemeteries to be located in the South Carolina, Florida, Pennsylvania, California, and Alabama. Once the bill is enacted, a report must be issued to Congress that includes a schedule of establishment and cost estimates for each cemetery. “I am proud that a large number of veterans have chosen South Carolina as their home, and this cemetery will serve as a monument to their sacrifice in defending freedom and liberty around the world,” said Congressman Wilson. ###
