Wilson Applauds President Bush’s Support of Federal Marriage Amendment

February 24, 2004
Today, Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) applauded President George W. Bush's decision to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that defines marriage as being between a man and a woman."I am so proud of the President for standing up for the sanctity of marriage," said Congressman Wilson. "Throughout history, marriage has been defined as the union of a man and a woman. America must keep its moral compass, and we cannot allow a few activist judges and officials to subvert the will of the overwhelming majority." Congressman Wilson is a cosponsor of H.J.Res. 56, an amendment to the U.S. Constitution introduced by Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave (R-Co.). The text of the amendment reads as follows: "Marriage in the United States shall consist only of the union of a man and a woman. Neither this Constitution or the constitution of any State, nor state or federal law, shall be construed to require that marital status or the legal incidents thereof be conferred upon unmarried couples or groups."###
