Wilson Calls for Democrats to End Estrada Filibuster
March 12, 2003
Today, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) made the following remarks following a press conference with Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ), discussing the upcoming cloture vote on judicial nominee Miguel Estrada. President George W. Bush nominated Mr. Estrada to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2001."The actions of Senate Democrats to filibuster President Bush's nomination of Miguel Estrada are not only appalling, they are subverting the constitution and the will of the American people" said Rep. Wilson. "Last November, the American people sent a clear message to end the obstruction of Daschle Democrats by electing a Republican majority in the U.S. Senate. Yet, Senate Democrats continue to play political games, refusing Miguel Estrada a fair vote.""There is absolutely no justifiable reason to refuse Mr. Estrada confirmation. Democrats have put forward a phony argument that Mr. Estrada has failed to explain his positions well enough. However, when he offered to answer any additional questions and to meet with any Senator personally, not one, to my knowledge, has taken him up on the offer," said Rep. Wilson."Judicial nominees have always received a simple majority vote once they are referred to the Senate floor, and Mr. Estrada should be no different. Democrats need to stop playing games with America's judiciary. Give Miguel Estrada a fair vote," said Rep. Wilson.###
