Wilson Introduces Bill to Protect Port Royal Sound

- Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02) issued the following statement today after introducing H.R. 3883, legislation directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to give priority consideration to Port Royal Sound under the EPA National Estuary Program. The EPA recognizes estuaries around the country that are in need of special protections.

“Port Royal Sound is an environmental treasure for the people of South Carolina and holds economic and military importance for the State and the country,” said Wilson. “We should do all we can to protect this estuary now before future environmental damage or deterioration make it more costly and difficult.”

“In the Lowcountry, where residents rely heavily on tourism and the fishing industry, Port Royal Sound continues to attract investment and residential growth while enhancing the character of the South Carolina coast. With the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, the Parris Island Marine Recruit Depot, and the Naval Hospital Beaufort all located along Port Royal Sound, it is imperative that we ensure these facilities are protected by caring for and respecting the integrity of the sound.”
