Wilson Introduces Resolutions Encouraging Russian Soldiers and Government Officials to Defect

March 17, 2022

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Wilson, Ranking Member of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission, introduced resolutions to encourage Russian soldiers and Russian government officials to defect.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call earlier this week also asked for Russian soldiers to defect.

In an effort to weaken Putin's War with Ukraine, both pieces of legislation offer support for expedited admission to the United States with refugee status if they clear all applicable vetting and security procedures.

In the case of Russian soldiers, those who turn over Russian military equipment to Ukraine could be eligible to receive a payment of up to $100,000, depending on the value of the equipment.

"Trapped by Putin's appetite for oil, money and power, we know that many Russians are forced to support this tragic war on his behalf, but realize it is morally wrong. Therefore, this resolution supports an honorable and safe way out, which would reduce the capability of Putin's War machine at its heart," said Wilson.
