Wilson Reacts to Hunting Island Projects Funding Shortage

February 23, 2004
Today, Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) announced he is seeking an explanation from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) on funding shortages for projects on Hunting Island State Park, S.C. Recently, USACE informed Congressman Wilson that Section 206 ecosystem restoration projects in South Carolina's Charleston District, which includes Beaufort County, will be suspended because funds have run out."I am surprised and troubled by the admission of the Army Corps of Engineers that they have run out of money to continue work on Hunting Island," said Congressman Wilson. "Having visited with the Corps at Hunting Island just this past December, I was informed the project was on schedule and had sufficient funding. I am asking for an immediate meeting and full accounting of where the funds were spent. I will work closely with the entire South Carolina Delegation and the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism to get to the bottom of this so work resume can quickly. Hunting Island is too precious and important to the entire state for the restoration projects to be delayed." ###
