Wilson Reintroduces Private Immigration Bill on Behalf of Tolani Family

January 23, 2003
Today, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) announced that he has reintroduced a private immigration bill, H.R. 335, this week on behalf of Hitesh Tolani, a Wofford College student, and his mother, Jaya Tolani, a native of India. The legislation will seek permanent United States residency for both of them."I am pleased to continue helping Jaya and Hitesh, as work on their case started with the late Congressman Floyd Spence," said Rep. Wilson. "As Co-Chair of the House India Caucus, I have been discussing this with our members in hopes of finding a solution to this family's distressing situation.""Every member of the South Carolina delegation has voiced their support for this legislation, and I am especially thankful for the hard work of Senator Lindsey Graham. Senator Graham was instrumental in the drafting of this legislation while he was in the House, and I know he will be working along with Senator Fritz Hollings to see that this important matter is given attention in the Senate."Jaya's husband, Gulab Tolani, died in 1995 before he and his family could have their application for permanent U.S. residency addressed, and now Jaya and her son Hitesh face deportation proceedings. Jaya's second son, Ravi, was born in the United States and therefore is an American citizen and is not in danger of being deported.###
