Wilson Remarks on President's State of the Union Address

January 29, 2003
Today, Rep. Joe Wilson (R-SC) made the following remarks after listening to President George W. Bush's State of the Union Address:"Tonight, President Bush has confirmed to the nation and the world, that America is united and determined to take on any challenges that face us both at home and abroad," said Rep. Wilson."The priorities for the President and the Republican Congress in 2003 are clear on both the domestic and national security fronts."Domestically, we must face the need to grow the economy and create jobs. I'm pleased that President Bush understands that the fastest and most effective way of doing this is lowering the tax burden on American families and small businesses. The best chance we have of spurring the economy is ending the unjust double taxation of dividend income, half of which is owned by seniors. To that end, I have introduced legislation to phase out the double taxation dividend income."Also, President Bush highlighted the growing and urgent need to ensure that all Americans have access to top-quality health care. Everyone deserves the right to choose their own doctor, and seniors should have the prescription drug coverage they need.""Additionally, the President spoke straightforwardly concerning the War on Terrorism. We cannot separate the situation with Iraq from the War on Terrorism, because Saddam Hussein's regime represents the worst kind of terrorist threat: an outlaw regime actively pursuing weapons of mass destruction with a willingness to use them and distribute them to their terrorist allies. Saddam Hussein must either immediately disarm, we can no longer stand for the inspection cat-and-mouse game."I am very proud of our President for his leadership and I have faith in him and his administration to work with Congress for the betterment of the American people and to preserve freedom and peace," said Rep. Wilson.
