Wilson Seeks Funding for Highway 278

Press Conference Friday With Members of Beaufort County Council

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-SC, will meet with members of the Beaufort County Council on Friday morning to inform them of his request to the U.S. House Appropriations Committee that Highway 278 receive $18 million for improvements including widening, alleviating capacity constraints, increasing the safety of intersections, and other improvements."Highway 278 is one of the most traveled roads in all of the Lowcountry, and it needs immediate attention. I have let Chairman Rogers know that this is my top priority for transportation funding." said Rep. Wilson.Highway 278 is the only route to Hilton Head Island and a primary evacuation route for South Carolina. In the past four years, over 850 traffic accidents have occurred on the road including five fatalities. Rep. Wilson wrote a letter to the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Transportation Appropriations, Rep. Hal Rogers, R-KY, notifying him that funding for improving Highway 278 is his top transportation priority. Rep. Wilson is the former chairman of the South Carolina State Senate Transportation Committee."I will continue pushing hard for this funding, and am so pleased to be working with Highway Commissioner John Hardee and the Beaufort County Council.
