Wilson Statement on Full Repeal of Widow’s Tax
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Joe Wilson (SC-02) issued the following statement on the full repeal of the ‘Widow's Tax.'
"Signed into law in December 2019, the Military Surviving Spouses Equity Act ensures our commitment to the surviving spouses of those brave men and women who have served our country. This legislation corrected a terrible wrong and made clear that we support members of our military, not just when we need them, but when their families need us most.
"Today marks the first full payment of the Survivor Benefit Plan after the three-year phase out of the offset. This compensation is paid to surviving spouses of servicemembers who died on active duty, as well as to surviving spouses of retirees who pass away as a result of service-connected causes.
"In honor of this occasion, I was grateful to speak with the most active grassroots participants from a Facebook group comprised of surviving military widows with over 2600 members. The families of our fallen heroes were counting on us to pass this into law, and we fought hard as a team to make it happen."
