A $79 million federal funding request for Savannah Ri­ver Site could receive expedited final approval from the White House's Office of Man­age­ment and Budget to halt employee furloughs, according to U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C.

The money requested by the De­part­ment of Energy was approved Wednesday by two House and two Sen­ate committees. The proposal, which would reassign funding from other projects to SRS, was delayed more than a month until the White House office gave its first OK this month.

When USC Aiken celebrated the official opening of its Veteran Student Success Center Sunday, it was fitting that the strip of fabric used in the ribbon-cutting ceremony was a patriotic red, white and blue. The facility, located in the school's Gregg-Graniteville Library, is designed to aid men and women who served in the military in making the transition back to civilian life.

"Pete the Cat" is a popular series for children, and Aiken Elementary School first graders were happy to hear one book read to them by a special guest on Thursday – U.S. Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C.

The congressman read about Pete's adventure in "Rocking in My Red Shoes" by Eric Litwin. According to the website, in the book, Pete learns about the school library, the lunchroom and the playground – playing his guitar throughout the day.

President Ronald Reagan's approach to protecting our national security was to provide peace through strength. The United States military has successfully remained the most superior power in the world by practicing this theory. Due to the passage of the Budget Control Act of 2011 last July, the Department of Defense is expected to suffer an automatic across-the-board $500 billion budget cut. These cuts will not be used to reduce our growing national deficit, but instead will be shifted from defense to other departments and agencies.

As I watched the Republican presidential candidate debate Oct. 18, I was startled to hear candidates jump at the opportunity to agree with President Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid on shutting down the nuclear waste
repository at Yucca Mountain.

While many of these candidates are running on platforms aimed to reduce the deficit and increase jobs, the termination of Yucca Mountain will do just the opposite.
