Did you know over half of South Carolina's electricity is generated by nuclear power? The Palmetto State is currently home to four nuclear power plants, with plans for two new nuclear reactors to come online by 2016. These would be among the first nuclear facilities constructed in the United States in more than 30 years and illustrates how our state and its workforce are frontrunners in the nuclear industry.

America is blessed by our Armed Forces.

They are the most effective military in history to achieve peace through strength. The men and women who wear U.S. uniforms are not only brave, they are volunteers who have made defending our freedom their life's work. Americans have long understood that to preserve our military we have to treat those willing to fight as well as we can.

Recently, it has been called into question why the military operates grocery and department stores. Last November, voters across America, including in the Second Congressional District of South Carolina, ushered in a new wave of conservatism that would put an end to out-of-control government spending fueled by over-reaching policies such as failed stimulus plans. By electing the largest conservative majority in the House since 1946, Washington was sent a very clear message: Stop spending money America does not have and focus on our nation's economy.

Higher fuel costs affect so many aspects of our lives: grocery bills, commuting costs, and job opportunities just to name a few.

Normally, birthdays are cause for celebration. They allow us to take a moment and reflect on the past year. It is hard to believe that just one short year ago, liberals in Congress haphazardly rammed through a 2,800 page health care bill that made its way to the President's desk where it was signed, sealed, and delivered to the American people. The arrogant manner in which the partisan Democratic leadership refused to explain what was specifically in the bill bothers me to this day.
